Not only the traffic rules, but also the costs for traffic sins can deviate significantly from the domestic ones abroad. Basically, what is prohibited in Austria should also be avoided abroad. “If you are traveling too quickly in popular holiday countries, go wrongly parked or under the influence of alcohol, you have to expect high fines, appropriation or even deprivation of freedom. Do not protect ignorance from punishment-so you should find out about the traffic rules applicable in the respective country,” says ÖAMTC-Jurist Verena Pronebner.

Where frenzy is particularly expensive
- Excessive speed: Driving too fast can be expensive. Particularly high punishments are in danger of scandinavia: in Norway, a speed crossing of 20 km/h costs at least 610 euros and in Sweden from 215 euros. For comparison: in Austria you pay 60 and 190 euros for speeding between 20 and 40 km/h. If you drive 50 km/h too quickly in Norway, you have to pay a minimum penalty of 1365 euros, in Austria it would be 300 to a maximum of 5000 euros. In Italy, too, you have to reach deep into the Börserl at increased speed – a speed crossing of 20 km/h costs 175 euros, at night the punishment increases by a third.
- Alcohol at the wheel: “Those who drive under the influence of alcohol not only risk security for themselves and other road users, but also drastic punishments,” says Pronebner. “In Italy, the vehicle is confiscated when the driver is traveling with 1.5 per thousand or more and is also registered as the owner.” Anyone who gets 1.2 per thousand at the wheel in Spain has to expect up to three months of imprisonment. From 0.5 per thousand you have to pay a fine in Germany and Spain from 500 euros, in Italy from 545 euros.
390 euros punishment for false parkers
- Parking wrong: “If you do not properly park your vehicle, you will not get it cheap in some countries. For parking false, you will be punished in Spain with up to 200 euros, in Hungary up to around 390 euros,” explains the ÖAMTC expert. “Not only parking in an unauthorized place, but also without a ticket can be expensive: Club members are still receiving demands over around 200 euros because they parked in Croatia years ago without a ticket. Therefore: be sure to inform on site and remove a photo evidence of the parking ticket and the payment receipt for five years.”
- Smartphone use: As in Austria, calls without a hands -free system are strictly prohibited in many other countries. In France, disregard costs at least 135 euros, in Italy even 165 euros and in Spain up to 200 euros can be due.
- Not buckled up: The non -laying of the seat belt can also be expensive. While you have to count at least 50 euros in Austria, at least 200 euros in Spain are due, in Greece a whopping 350 euros.
