More than just tree slices: greening modules in the Linz Neustadt
Gregor Mader, landscape architect

With its tree planting offensive, which was decided in 2019, the city of Linz is taking a remarkable way to green greening. The trigger is the climate debate, but there are other aspects.

In conversation with the landscape architect Gregor Mader from Linz Studio Blaugruen, the landscape architect Gregor Mader is about the social and aesthetic improvements that arrive in Linz with a lively city green.

Oönachrichten: What is the ideal urban space for you today?

Gregor Mader: It is small and diverse, green in many forms, stimulates by humans, animals and plants. Nice at the end of the day. People should be able to meet here, vitality can arise.

How do you assess the tree planting offensive of the city of Linz?

It is a great, contemporary program that experiences quite broad political and social support. You dare to try different approaches. For example, we green the Neustadtviertel with more than 50 trees. In the past, street spaces were often planned according to purely traffic aspects, there were dominated parking spaces, and there was a tree in between. When landscape architects come into play, it becomes more creative and the rooms get a new, more attractive identity. However, we are asked to plan “car park”.
