It is a déjà vu for many residents of the Merkur settlement. It was less than ten years ago that you have successfully resisted a large construction project on the Schablederweg. The Graz “Wegraz” wanted to build 42 apartments and an underground car park with 164 parking spaces at the time, old trees should have given way, the residents feared around their green lungs. Finally, the project failed due to the lack of political majority for changing the development plan. Only a two -storey building with eight apartments on the other side of the street was built.

Now the company has submitted a construction project again, more precisely a fuselage project. This time only the underground car park of the failed project with a total of 42 parking spaces is to be built, and there are 22 above -ground. “We want to make parking spaces available to the apartment owners because it is difficult to find parking space on the surface,” said Wegraz managing director Dieter Johs when asked about OÖN. Interest was also expressed.
Closed against project
According to the citizens’ initiative, the Merkur settlement knows nothing. On the contrary: the residents would stand up against the project, it is said. As the first attempt in 2016, the criticism is that the construction project destroys the natural character of the housing estate and also contradicts the urban climate and mobility goals.
