After two runs on the Yanqing ice track, the Austrians were 0.511 seconds behind the now five-time Olympic champions Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt from Germany and 0.412 seconds behind their compatriots Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken.
At the fifth Winter Games in a row, Austria won a luge doubles medal, which meanwhile has ten medals in Beijing (two gold, four silver, four bronze). There is another chance for Steu/Koller on Thursday in the team relay with Wolfgang Kindl and Madeleine Egle. Kindl had already won silver in the men’s singles on Sunday.
Reactions after the luge doubles competition and bronze by Thomas Steu/Lorenz Koller on Wednesday at the Olympic Games in Beijing:
Thomas Steu (Bronze Winner): “I’m somewhere emotional right now. I’m super happy and super proud. This medal is extremely important after my injury, we always fought back really well. The other two were a bit better, but I’m proud of the two of us and the whole team .”
Lorenz Koller (Bronze Winner): “It’s a very big moment for us. The moment of shock at 13, thank God, ended well. But we wouldn’t have been able to ride up front without the mistake.”
Markus Prock (ÖRV President): “We’re happy that we’ve achieved the target. The goal was to win two medals here. Congratulations to Thomas and Lorenz, they did a great job, they went down coolly. On the other hand, you’ve been flirting “That we’re right at the front, up to training. But we’re overjoyed. It’s gotten a bit warmer, we don’t want to complain – a medal is wonderful. I’ve been to the Olympics a lot myself. You have to take what you can and a medal is always great. We’ve always been on the podium in doubles since 2006, wonderful, even three doubles have stopped and there are three again. The know-how is also passed on, I think that makes us strong.”
