Lula lashes out at Petrobras for the price of fuel

“It is not possible that the country that discovered the largest oil reserves of the 21st century is importing gasoline. We have to be refined. What is happening with the current policy of Petrobras? We are exporting crude oil and importing gasoline from the United States in dollars,” he wrote.

The former leftist president, who gave a boost to Petrobras as the country’s flagship brand during his governments (2003-2011), thus resumed his position against the dollarization of fuel prices in Brazil.

Already last week, Lula da Silva had anticipated that, if elected again, he would not maintain the dollarized price of fuel.

Fluctuations in the prices of gasoline, diesel and gas depend largely on Petrobras, which sets them based on the value of the product on the international market.

In 2021, fuels rose by around 50% in Brazildriven by the revaluation of crude oil and the strong appreciation of the US dollar against the real, becoming a headache for the current president Jair Bolsonaro.

This also pushed inflation, which closed last year at 10.06%, the highest rate since 2015.

Bolsonaro accused the governors and their policies of activity restrictions as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic over and over again.

Last December, when the market balked at supporting his re-election bid, he flirted with a plan to privatize Petrobras.

Together with his allied base in Congress, he currently defends the idea of reforming the Constitution in order to directly manage the price of fuel and the taxes that are levied on it, a measure described as electoral by analysts.
