If London applies new sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities, there will be another round of tension in relations between Russia and the UK. This was stated on February 9 in a statement published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“In particular, it was recently announced that the British government had submitted a document to Parliament that provides new grounds for bringing Russian legal entities and individuals under sanctions,” the document says.
As Moscow believes, London wants to be able to impose sanctions on any companies acting in the interests of the Russian Federation.
“If implemented, such a step will cause another round of tension in bilateral relations. In addition, by doing so, the UK undermines its own investment attractiveness and actually threatens its big business, which is actively interacting with Russian economic operators,” the ministry said.
They recalled that relations between the two countries are at a low point through the fault of London.
“The course towards “freezing” the political dialogue was taken by Great Britain in 2014 under the pretext of events in Ukraine and Crimea,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.
Also, a sharp aggravation of relations was caused by an incident with the family of former GRU officer Sergei Skripal in Salisbury.
“The British side must be clearly aware that without a clear change in the tone of the speeches of representatives of the British leadership, productive interaction is impossible either in solving bilateral problems or in resolving international problems,” the Foreign Ministry continued.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the eve of negotiations between British and Russian Foreign Ministers Liz Truss and Sergey Lavrov. On February 9, the head of British diplomacy arrived in Moscow.
During the talks at the Russian Foreign Ministry, it is planned to discuss the state and prospects of Russian-British relations, the themes of European security, and touch upon other topical issues on the agenda.
On January 30, the head of British diplomacy announced that the UK would expand sanctions against Russia. The minister indicated that London is going to expand the list of sanctions legislation so that any company representing the interests of the Kremlin could be subject to restrictions.
On the same day, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov drew attention to the fact that London’s statement also “undermines the investment attractiveness and attractiveness of the UK” as a whole. He clarified that an attack by a single country on Russian business implies retaliatory measures.
The United States and a number of European countries have recently expressed concern over the alleged increase in Russia’s “aggressive actions” against Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied such accusations, saying that it does not threaten anyone, and such statements are used as an excuse to place as much NATO military equipment as possible near the borders of the Russian Federation.
On January 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia was not going to start a war with Ukraine, and Western countries and the United States were “hysterically” developing the topic of a threat to Ukraine from the Russian Federation instead of forcing Ukraine to comply with the Minsk agreements.
