After a birth, everything is usually about the baby – but mothers should also look at themselves in the puerperium: “Women are in an absolute exception at birth. They do great things, and then the body simply takes time to recover,” says Barbara Röblreiter, midwife and district manager in the Freistadt hospital.

In the phase of the so-called “weekly”-up to about eight weeks after the birth-things like the structure of the mother-child relationship, healing birth injuries, breastfeeding, regression and, last but not least, the new role as a mother. “Women often have the feeling that they have to be in top shape, slim and efficient shortly after birth. But the more time they take in the puerperium, the faster the regression process is meant not only physical regression, but also the psychological to find themselves again,” says the expert in podcast interview.

Sleep when the baby is sleeping

The ultimate tip: sleep when the baby is sleeping and treating yourself to recovery. And so that it also works well: accept help. “It is best to give your social environment appropriate orders before the birth. That can be brought from food until tasks in the household.”

The hormone carousel after birth is not always just the total joy. Some also feel a “baby blues”. “The exchange with other mothers helps to help the mental load that we often impose and alleviate about the baby,” says Röblreiter. If the baby blues turns into real sadness, it would be important to get psychological help.

At the physical level, the regression can begin with very easy exercises a few days after birth, such as moving breathing exercises or the labia. Proper retrofitting gymnastics is only recommended after eight to twelve weeks. “You should go to the limits, but not about it. It is important to find yourself into yourself,” says Röblreiter. The strengthening of the pelvic floor is also important in order not to get problems like incontinence later in old age.
