French partners should pay more attention to the story with the German TV channel Deutsche Welle (DW) and take into account that in some cases there is a limit, said on Thursday, February 10, Russian Ambassador to Paris Alexei Meshkov.
“I would advise our French colleagues to take a closer look at the history with Deutsche Welle. Maybe it will affect their mental process. I didn’t mean anything. I’m talking about the need to respect the freedom of speech and the right of the Russian media to work on a common basis in the country. Of course the situation here [во Франции] not like that. There [в Германии] just didn’t get to work. And RT France and Sputnik are working despite the restrictions. But [ситуация с DW] this is just evidence that our patience is coming to an end, ”the ambassador said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Meshkov added that the issue of the work of the Russian media in France was considered by the French authorities, OSCE representatives on freedom of the media, and the Council of Europe.
“We will not leave this topic, we will continue to put it before the French. The policy of sanctions against the media is not our way, we have never used it. But in some cases, there is already a limit that requires reciprocity, ”said the diplomat about the closure of the Deutsche Welle office in Moscow in response to the cessation of broadcasting of the RT DE channel.
On February 2, the German authorities banned the broadcasting of the RT DE TV channel on the Eutelsat satellite, smart TV, the RT website and app, and the Odyssey platform. RT expressed the opinion that the actions of the German media regulator are illegal and violate the European Convention on Cross-border Television (ECTT).
On February 3, the Russian authorities, as part of the first stage of response to the ban on the broadcasting of the RT DE channel in Germany, decided to close the Deutsche Welle correspondent office in Russia. On February 4, the Moscow bureau of the TV channel stopped working.
