French President Emmanuel Macron, after talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, stated the need for joint work and dialogue for the sake of peace and security in Europe, he said on Wednesday, February 9.
“In Moscow, President Putin and I had a rich, meaningful exchange of views. To maintain stability, peace and restore the mechanisms of trust, it is our duty to work together. We are both convinced of this. There is no reasonable solution that would not go through dialogue. This must continue in order to resume the process of de-escalation, to obtain security guarantees on the borders of our Europe. It must continue with France, in the Normandy format, at the European level, with the US and NATO,” the French President wrote on his Instagram.
Macron stressed that neither Russia nor the Europeans are interested in “unrest and instability.”
The success of the French leader in Moscow was also announced by the Secretary of State at the French Foreign Ministry Clement Bon on the air of the TV channel LCI.
“Progress has been made and commitments made not to worsen the situation [на границе с Украиной]. Macron is the only European leader who has a serious dialogue with Putin,” the diplomat said.
Macron also told American President Joe Biden about his trip to Moscow. During a telephone conversation, the French colleague informed the head of the White House about the results of his visit to Russia and Ukraine.
“They spoke of ongoing diplomatic efforts, including containment, being undertaken in close coordination with our allies and partners in response to Russia’s ongoing military buildup on Ukraine’s borders,” the White House said.
The talks between Putin and Macron took place on Monday, February 7, in the Kremlin. The conversation between the two leaders lasted more than five hours. Putin and Macron began their conversation in the representative office of the first building of the Kremlin, and continued over a working lunch.
Meeting his French colleague, Putin noted that he had not seen Macron in person for two years, so many issues have accumulated that can and should be discussed in a direct format. The French leader noted that a dialogue with Russia is necessary as the only way to ensure real stability and security for the European continent.
During the final press conference, Putin stressed that statements about the aggression of the Russian Federation “at least do not correspond to sound logic.” He also pointed out that the further expansion of NATO to the borders of the Russian Federation poses a threat, and in the event of a military conflict between Russia and the alliance, there will be no winners. In addition, the Russian leader called on Ukraine to comply with the Minsk agreements. He stressed that there is no alternative to these agreements.
