A mosque again since 2020: Hagia Sophia in Istanbul
The building should remain open to services and visitors.

The Hagia Sophia dome in Istanbul, almost a year and a half of thousands of years, is being restored. As the Turkish government’s information office announced this week, according to Kathpress, the historical dome is to be structurally reinforced in order to secure it against earthquakes. After three years of work on the sultan graves in the forecourt, on the minarets and on the facade, the restoration of the Hagia Sophia thus entered a new phase.

In 2023, the south of Türkiye was shaken by an earthquake of strength 7.8. Istanbul was not affected, but the fear of similar other quakes is great.
