Animated series “Futurama” gets new episodes

“The series will go into production in February and premiere in 2023,” the streaming service announced on Thursday. David X. Cohen, who co-created the animated series with The Simpsons creator Matt Groening in the late 1990s, was quoted as saying: “I’m thrilled to have another chance to think about the future – or really about anything but the present.” Matt Groening added: “It is a true honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama one last time before being abruptly canceled again.”

“Futurama” is one of the most famous TV series from around the turn of the millennium. The extremely ironic format revolves around the adventures of 25-year-old pizza delivery man Fry, who accidentally freezes himself on December 31, 1999 and wakes up 1,000 years later in a brave new world: His illustrious circle of friends includes the one-eyed beauty Leela and Bender , a robot who is kleptomaniac, alcoholic and ruthless.

“Futurama” was created in 1999 and series production for television ended in 2003. After that, four more films were made for the DVD market in 2007. Because these sold so well, there were new TV episodes from 2010 to 2013. A total of 140 episodes were produced over the seven seasons.

Marci Proietto of production company 20th Television Animation said: “What I love about animation is that it’s possible for a successful series to take a hiatus and then pick it up again years later – even on a different platform – and picks up right where she left off. Futurama is one of those shows.”
