López Obrador surprised on Wednesday by raising the need for a “pause” in relations with Spain after denouncing alleged acts of corruption in which Spanish firms would have incurred to obtain contracts in Mexico.
“It’s a pause. They say: ‘that does not exist in the language of foreign policy.’ It is nothing more than a respectful, fraternal protest against the abuses and grievances committed against the people of Mexico,” insisted the president in his daily press conference.
From Lyon, France, the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, declared himself surprised by López Obrador’s comments and questioned the scope of these expressions.
“What I said yesterday is ‘let’s have a break’, don’t talk about breaking up, I said ‘We are going to calm down the relationship, so that people no longer think that Mexico is going to be looted with impunity.’ It’s not xenophobia, it’s that we have to respect each other,” he insisted.
López Obrador has addressed on his own initiative in his conferences the issue of the relationship with Spain, which, he warned on Wednesday, “now is not good.”
He immediately attacked once again against Spanish firms such as Repsol and Iberdrolawith investments in Mexico in the oil and electricity sectors, respectively.
He pointed out that there was a “conspiracy” in business, an “economic and political promiscuity” between the previous governments of Mexico and that of Spain.
After the arrival of López Obrador to the presidency, in December 2018, relations between both countries have been tense due to these criticisms of companies and the demand for an official apology from Spain for the violence during the colonial conquest, which Madrid has ignored. .
Spain is Mexico’s leading European trading partner with an exchange of nearly 10,000 million euros per year, according to official estimates for 2020.
