Russian Ambassador to Romania Valery Kuzmin was summoned to the country’s Foreign Ministry. This is due to his statements during a press conference on Wednesday on the occasion of the Diplomatic Worker’s Day, as reported on Thursday, February 10, by the Romanian Foreign Ministry.
“During this meeting, the Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs, Iulian Fota, confirmed to the Ambassador the position constantly and clearly repeated by Romania, the United States and NATO : the missile defense system in Deveselu is purely defensive in nature, is not directed against the Russian Federation, is intended exclusively for [отражения] potential ballistic missile attacks from outside the Euro-Atlantic space, and there is no intention or possibility of deploying offensive-type missiles within this complex, ”the agency said in a statement.
According to the Secretary of State, the speech by Russian Ambassador Kuzmin and any such statements form a “mistaken opinion” in the public mind and generally do not favor bilateral dialogue, which is built on the basis of trust established between states.
Romania joined the NATO Partnership for Peace (PfP) program in January 1994, becoming one of the first states among the former countries of the socialist bloc.
Konstantin Bogdanov, a senior researcher at the IMEMO RAS, told Izvestia on May 6 that the United States and NATO have two main facilities in Romania – the Aegis Ashore missile defense fire base in Deveselu and the Mikhail Kogalniceanu air base. In addition, the multinational division “Southeast” is deployed, which is a Romanian infantry brigade, reinforced by some units of other NATO countries.
In 2019, it became known that in the next 20 years, Bucharest will spend about €2.5 billion to modernize the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base on the Black Sea coast. They plan to build new hangars, runways for military aircraft, fuel storage facilities and many other infrastructure facilities.
