By 2030, every person in Austria should have the ID Austria. It should also be issued at birth. This is the goal of the new government – an ambitious one when you look at the current numbers. Around 3.8 million people in Austria are currently using electronic identity. “We want and will make the ID Austria more user-friendly and easier and the use cases, explain the benefits for everyone. In summer there will therefore be a relaunch of the ID Austria,” announced Alexander Pröll, VP State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery, recently in an interview.
What is the ID Austria?
The ID Austria is the further development of the cell phone signature or the citizens’ card and, as a digital identity, enables online identification, the application for digital ID cards and the use of numerous other offers. Last but not least, the ID Austria should save time in the event of authorities or make them obsolete at all. This evidence works via smartphone and app.

The ID Austria was developed by the Federal Chancellery in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the countries, the city and municipal association as well as social security. It has been in use since December 2023 and replaced the cell phone signature at the time. What is new is that the ID Austria can do more than just sign. It offers additional functions, such as the use of digital ID cards, safe access to health and social data as well as the possibility of digitally to be shown to private providers and organizations.

The possible uses of the ID Austria grow steadily. Citizens can already use more than 200 digital services. An overview of a wide variety of applications:
Living & everyday life
It is possible to change your reporting slip, for example when moving, or log out. You can also apply for a confirmation of residence, access a reporting information online or apply for the residential allowance.
Family & children
You can also save yourself if you want to apply for childcare allowance, family allowance or a birth certificate.
Work & education
In addition to the inspection of the pension account, it is also possible to use a wide variety of AMS services. School or university registrations can also be carried out online.
mobility
The driver’s license and registration certificate can be registered, which enables any traffic control digitally. It is also possible to report a lost driver’s license as well as a replacement for this.
An electronic signature for contracts and applications enables you to safely sign contracts, invoices, terminations or forms. You can also use the ID Austria for access to Finanzonline (for tax returns or repayments). The possibility is very often used to extend your passport.
Applying to an election card, receiving the ELGA health act for findings or medication as well as viewing in your own social security data are also popular application examples.
