Imminent firing of 3,000 employees in New York for refusing the vaccine

The imminent measure will take place amid growing discontent in the country over restrictions to fight the pandemic, which pushed several states to lift the mandatory use of masks indoors.

The figure of 3,000 potential layoffs is less than 1% of the workforce of the city of New York, made up of 370,000 civil servants.

“You have to get vaccinated. If you don’t follow the rules, you’re making that decision,” Adams said at a news conference yesterday. “Everyone has understood it,” said the Mayor, who has been in office for about 40 days.

He further assessed that these officials who resist immunization are not being fired, but “leaving” their jobs.

The number of dismissals could increase, according to the AFP news agency, because at least 13,044 people cited religious and medical reasons for not getting vaccinated, and of that number a little more of the requests were processed.

Just over 2,000 were approved and almost 5,000 denied, according to local media citing sources from the Municipality.

The city of New York, hard hit by the coronavirus, decreed mandatory vaccination for all officials since last November 1.

As of December 27, it expanded this requirement for workers of the 184,000 private sector companies and for those over 12 years of age who wanted to enter public places such as restaurants and theaters or cinemas.

At least 38,000 people died in the metropolis of almost 9 million inhabitants.

In other places like San Francisco, Washington state and Massachusetts, hundreds of workers lost their jobs for refusing to be vaccinated.
