Thousands of believers had been waiting for the result of the first ballot on Wednesday evening. It was expected with a result at 7:00 p.m., but the waiting time is extended significantly and the tension grew. The eyes and smartphones of the many believers on St. Peter’s Square in Rome were directed towards the chimney, from which black smoke only rose shortly after 9 p.m.
