The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine imposed sanctions against the Nash TV channel

The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine has imposed five-year sanctions against companies that own the opposition TV channel Nash. This was announced on February 11 by the secretary of the department, Alexei Danilov, at a briefing.

“Sanctions have been imposed against the Nasha Praga companies, against the Nash 24, Our 365 companies and the company that directly, as far as we are informed, owns all these companies, which is located in Cyprus,” Danilov said.

According to him, the decision on sanctions was made on the basis of materials from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). Danilov did not name specific reasons for applying sanctions to the TV channel.

At the same time, he assured that until yesterday, allegedly, he did not even know about the Nash TV channel.

In addition, the National Security and Defense Council imposed sanctions against Vitrina TV for broadcasting Russian TV channels banned in the country. According to Danilov, Ukraine feels the support of international partners and is confident that, if necessary, the West will support Kiev in immediately imposing sanctions against Russia.

At the same time, a rally was held in Kharkiv in defense of the Nash channel. The night before, the journalists of the TV channel and its founder Yevgeny Muraev, who knew about the upcoming decision of the National Security and Defense Council in advance, called for a peaceful protest in Kharkiv to speak out in support of the journalistic team.

Prior to this, on the night of February 4, YouTube blocked the UkrLive and First Nezalezhny channels, owned by Verkhovna Rada deputy Nestor Shufrich, an associate of the co-chairman of the Opposition Platform – For Life party Viktor Medvedchuk.

In January, a petition was registered on the website of the office of the President of Ukraine, in which President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was asked to impose sanctions against the Nash TV channel due to allegedly “regular broadcasting of anti-state statements.” The petition received the necessary 25,000 votes for Zelensky to consider it.

On February 2, 2021, Zelensky imposed sanctions against Medvedchuk-affiliated TV channels 112 Ukraine, ZIK and NewsOne. From February 3, they stopped broadcasting via satellite and cable TV networks.
