Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the opening of the Olympics in Beijing held many signs and signals for the United States and the Western community, Gordon G. Chang, author of China’s Coming Collapse, told The Hill on Feb. 10.
Chang mentions the words of US President Joe Biden during a press conference after talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that many people forget a key item in the Russian budget – oil and gas exports. And the visit to Beijing provided Russia with an economic “lifeline”, since in the event of US sanctions and a reduction in sales markets, Moscow will have a major partner – Beijing.
“Putin in Beijing on February 4 at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics announced new oil and gas deals with China worth $117.5 billion. New deals will not help Russia cope with the current crisis – gas will not flow through the new pipeline to China for at least two years, but Beijing may increase purchases of Russian hydrocarbons under existing agreements,” the author writes.
Chan cites China expert and author of A Vision for China’s Victory, Jonathan Ward, who believes that the Russian and Chinese governments have made it clear to the world that their joint confrontation with the United States will be mutually beneficial.
“China, through its economic cooperation with Iran, has already demonstrated its willingness to work with countries that have been subject to Western sanctions. Russian-Chinese relations flourish in a wide range of areas – military, energy, infrastructure, even in ideology. We should expect that Beijing will want to help partners in the Kremlin, ”the portal quoted Dr. Ward as saying.
Previously, a similar topic was expressed in Europe. After Putin’s visit to Beijing, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced the creation of an “authoritarian” alliance between Russia and China. The Kremlin pointed out the inappropriateness of using such assessments of sovereign states.
On February 4, Russian leader Vladimir Putin held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Following the meeting, Moscow and Beijing called on the United States to abandon plans to deploy ground-based intermediate and shorter-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. The parties also opposed the further expansion of NATO and called on the alliance to abandon the approaches of the Cold War.
In addition, Putin and Xi Jinping signed a statement on international relations, which states that friendship between Russia and China has no borders, there are “no forbidden zones” in their cooperation.
