Survey: Two-thirds dissatisfied with the government, SPÖ and ÖVP on par

A current survey by Peter Hajek for ATV shows that 69 percent are dissatisfied. Conversely, satisfaction is at a low point at 28 percent. In the current Sunday question for Unique Research for “profil”, the coalition does not have a majority, the SPÖ with 25 percent and the ÖVP with 24 percent are de facto equal in the survey.

On February 25, 2020 there were the first confirmed corona cases in Austria, the then fresh coalition of ÖVP and Greens had to switch to pandemic management. After two years of lockdowns and other restrictions, satisfaction with the work of the federal government is poor: according to Hajek’s “question of the week” for ATV (800 respondents aged 16 and over, by phone and online, this week, fluctuation range 3.5 percentage points). 69 percent “less” or “not at all” satisfied, and only 28 percent “very satisfied” or “satisfied”.

Happiness decreased from April 2020

As the time series shows, the satisfaction levels have changed drastically over the course of the pandemic: At the start of the coalition in January 2020, 48 percent of those surveyed were still satisfied and 41 percent were dissatisfied. In April 2020 – in the middle of the month there were gradual easing – more than three quarters (76 percent) were satisfied with the government’s work and only a fifth (21 percent) were dissatisfied.

Then the mood went downhill, in the survey in December 2020 in the light of the first Corona Christmas, 55 percent were satisfied and 42 percent were dissatisfied. In spring, specifically in March 2021, only 42 percent said they were satisfied, and at 55 percent the majority was dissatisfied. Almost a year later in February, the survey now shows 69 percent dissatisfied and only 28 percent satisfied.

“The massive decline in satisfaction with the work of the federal government is not difficult to interpret: Corona crisis management in general, the corona vaccination requirement in particular and a chancellor party that is constantly under pressure from the judiciary,” Hajek explained the results.

Seven percent for MFG

In surveys, the ÖVP has long since lost its clear first place of the past few years with peaks in excess of 40 percent, including the most recent high estimate of the Sunday question for the magazine “profil” by Unique Research (800 respondents aged 16 and over, by telephone and online, this week ): The ÖVP is therefore 24 percent, the SPÖ 25 percent. The maximum fluctuation range of the survey is 3.5 percentage points. In the 2019 National Council election, the ÖVP got 37.5 percent, the SPÖ 21.2 percent.

According to the survey, the FPÖ would take third place with 18 percent (2019 election: 16.2 percent). At 13 percent, the Greens are just below their result in the last National Council election (13.9 percent). The NEOS get ten percent in the Sunday question (election 2019: 8.1 percent). The opponents of vaccination MFG would move into the National Council with seven percent.
