The diplomatic offensive continues but the US fears an imminent invasion of Ukraine

Amid this general alarm, diplomacy intensifies this weekend. Biden will speak with Putin on Saturday after their respective chiefs of staff had a conversation on Friday. A call between Putin and Macron is also planned.

In parallel, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will talk on Saturday with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

“If Russia is really interested in resolving this crisis through diplomacy and dialogue, we are ready too.”Blinken said. “But all this in a context of de-escalation and for now we have only seen the opposite from Moscow,” he insisted, stressing that this is a “key” moment.

On Friday, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that offense is a “very, very real possibility”but US intelligence does not know whether the Russian president “has made a final decision” or not.

US officials do not rule out Russia making this decision even during the Beijing Olympics, which end on February 20.
