When it comes to helping others, the Herbe from St. Georgen an der Gusen (Bez. Perg) has a rich wealth of experience: Grandma Brigitte (80), Grandpa Harald (85), her sons Eckhart (56) and Uwe (53) as well as the grandchildren Stephan (22), Anja (20), Lorenz (19) and Livia (12) engagement in the youth red cross, in Rescue service, in the journal service, in training or in public relations. Together they bring it to 125 years of service experience at the Red Cross. But the origin of its connection to the Red Cross goes much further back: great -great -grandfather Alois Lehner founded the rescue department of the Ottensheim fire brigade at the end of the 19th century. His daughter Paula helped during the First World War as a Red Cross sister in a hospital on the Eastern Front – she paid for this assignment with her life. Despite this stroke of fate, the family commitment has been unbroken for well more than a century: “We want to help people in need – out of gratitude that we are healthy and can live in peace and freedom in a democratic country,” says Eckhart Herbe.
