The US president assured that although Washington is ready for dialogue, it is also prepared for “other scenarios.”
A senior White House official reported that “the conversation between the two presidents was professional and substantial” and that Putin and Biden agreed that their teams will continue the dialogue in the coming days.
Russia had accused the United States and its allies of promoting a “propaganda campaign” about an eventual invasion of Ukraine, after Washington assured that this could happen “at any moment”.
Tensions around Ukraine have been aggravated in recent months by the build-up of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border, which the West interprets as preparations for a possible invasion.
Russia rejects these suspicions, defends the right to move forces within its own territory as it sees fit and accuses NATO of seeking pretexts to place more military equipment near Russian borders.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the West unleashes “hysteria” to cover up Ukraine’s sabotage of the Minsk Agreements, which lay the foundations for a political solution to the internal armed conflict in Donbass.
