Construction workers and project managers have been looking forward to this day for years. Locals came with their bicycles to become eyewitnesses of the historical maneuver. Everyone looked up: 50 meters above their heads, a 15,000 tons of heavy and 420 meter long concrete slab made its way to the middle bridge pillar. Since the morning hours, the so -called cross -boost of the Aurach bridge has been in progress.
As the highest bridge in the West Autobahn, it spans the Aurachtal near Regau – and has been for more than six decades. Because the old building fabric literally became intolerable, ASFINAG has been building a completely new motorway bridge for 65 million euros since summer 2022.
“Absolute premiere”
The old pillars and structures have long been torn down, the new building is more or less complete. On Wednesday it was about moving the structure into its end position. On it is the road where traffic should roll towards Salzburg from early autumn.
Moving a structure of this magnitude is an “absolute premiere” for ASFINAG, Board Director Hartwig Hufnagl emphasized. Project manager Martin Schnellmann pursued the spectacle accordingly. “There is a queasy feeling because we lack the routine,” he said, but was optimistic: “When the cross -boost is completed today, I open a beer.”
