The Bosphorus Strait is closed to ship traffic due to a malfunction of a cargo ship. This was announced on Saturday, February 12, by the General Directorate of Coastal Security of Turkey.
“The Bosphorus was closed to ship traffic due to a breakdown in the equipment of the Liberian-flagged CHENG MAY vessel, which is 295 meters long and carries about 170,000 tons of coal,” the statement says.
As the portal Haber 7 clarifies, the tugboats Spasatel-1, Spasatel-5, Spasatel-11 and the boat KEGM-3 were sent to help the ship.
Earlier, in January, due to a breakdown in the engine of the Brave Night dry cargo ship heading to Romania, the movement of ships in both directions along the Bosphorus Strait was stopped. After the work was completed, traffic along the Bosphorus returned to normal.
The Bosphorus connects the Marmara and Black Seas. On the way from the Black Sea to the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, ships pass the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles Strait located not far from it. The maximum width of the Bosphorus is 3.7 km, and the length is about 30 km.
