The US Navy submarine was not in Russian territorial waters near the Kuril Islands. This was announced on Saturday, February 12, at the Pentagon, presenting their version of what happened.
“Russia’s claims that we are conducting operations in its territorial waters are not true,” Kyle Raines, spokesman for the US Indo-Pacific Command, told TASS.
At the same time, earlier the US Department of Defense confirmed that the authorities were aware of the situation with the American nuclear submarine near the Kuril ridge, refusing to clarify any details of the incident.
Raines also declined to answer questions about the specific location of the U.S. submarines, adding that the U.S. “flights, maritime operations and operates safely in international waters.”
Earlier that day, on February 12, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a US Navy Virginia-class submarine had entered Russian territorial waters near the Kuril island of Urup. The department emphasized that the American submarine ignored the requirements to leave Russian waters. The frigate “Marshal Shaposhnikov” used special equipment in connection with the violation of the territorial waters of the Russian Federation by the submarine.
According to Izvestia, the American submarine tried to follow the exercises of the Pacific Fleet. However, she was discovered even before she began the task. The Ministry of Defense handed a note to the US military attache because of the violation of the state borders of the Russian Federation by the American submarine, and it was stated that the actions of the American submarine are regarded as a gross violation of international law.
On February 12, in an interview with Izvestia, the former commander of a nuclear submarine missile carrier, captain of the first rank Igor Kurdin noted that following the exercises of the naval forces is a common world practice, but the fact that an American submarine entered the territorial waters of Russia radically changes situation. According to him, it is hard to believe that the Virginia, which has the most modern means of navigation, could accidentally cross the state border of the Russian Federation.
