The United States insists that the world must be prepared for a war in Ukraine

“The way they have strengthened the military presence” seems to indicate the “possibility of military action in the short term,” he added.

“We are ready to continue the work of diplomacy, but we are also ready to respond in a united and determined manner” with our allies, if Russia “proceeds to an invasion,” Sullivan stressed. “The road to diplomacy with Russia remains open,” he slipped.

“We can’t exactly predict the day but we’ve been saying for a long time that we’re in that window of time where an invasion can start at any time. Russian military action in Ukraine can start any day,” Sullivan added.

Russia is paving the way for a “potential pretext” to invade Ukraine, he insisted.

The United States and its allies are working on sanctions to target Russian oligarchs, he said later.

Sullivan spoke a day after President Joe Biden warn his Russian peer, Vladimir Putinof the “swift and severe costs” if he ordered an invasion of Ukraine.

The United States has estimated that Russia has more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border, with thousands added this week.

On Saturday, the United States pulled some of its forces out of Ukraine and ordered the evacuation of most of its embassy personnel in Kiev.

Presidential adviser Sullivan had warned Americans in Ukraine on Friday to leave and that military action could begin with an aerial bombardment that could kill civilians.

The national security adviser declined to comment on whether he thinks Putin is more likely to order a border buildup to invade neighboring Ukraine, instead pointing to “an acceleration of that buildup.”

“We are prepared to respond immediately and decisively, flanked by our allies and partners, if Russia advances. We will defend the territory of the NATOWe will impose costs on Russia and make sure that we come out of this a stronger West, more determined than we have been in 30 years, and that Russia ultimately bears a significant strategic cost for military action.”
