The winning candidate has prevailed over the doctor of the Left Gerhard Trabert (96 votes) and the candidate of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, the economist Max Otteformer member of the CDU (140 votes).
Steinmeier, candidate of the government semaphore coalition parties and also of the CDU/CSU, thus becomes the fifth German president to repeat a mandate. After the vote, accepted the appointment, which will be effective from March 19.
“I think his expertise, his sovereignty in these confusing times of fake news and constant back and forth, is very beneficial,” said CSU leader Markus Soeder. “A federal president should help calm things down and so far Steinmeier has done very well,” he argued.
Steinmeier himself referred after the vote to the tension in Ukraine and has held responsible for it Russiafor which he has summoned the Russian president, Vladimir Putinto “not underestimate the strength of democracy” and to “loosen the noose around Ukraine’s neck.”
“We are witnessing a threat of conflict, of a war in Eastern Europe, and Russia bears the responsibility,” the German president said. The Ukrainian people “have the right to live without fear or threats, to self-determination and sovereignty” since “no country in the world has the right to destroy that” and “we will respond with determination to whoever tries it,” he argued.
