Google gave Google I/O insights into current projects and upcoming innovations at its annual developer conference. These affect the search engine, the Ki-Chatbot Gemini or the Android operating system at the software level. The internet giant also surprised with new hardware in the form of smart glasses. The innovations and announcements at a glance:

A search engine in AI mode

With all the innovations in the AI area and the focus on projects such as Gemini, Google’s real core competence has come into the media in recent years. The search engine, which went online on September 27, 1998 and gave its own name on the Internet (“Google”), is still the company’s most important product from the Silicon Valley. In addition, the competition from Openai and Co. is getting bigger, whose AI products are increasingly powerful. It is therefore not surprising that Google is now looking for the focus again.

The overview with AI, which has also been available in this country since March, was a step in this direction. Now the next follows with the so-called AI mode. The experience with the AI overview showed that Google search has been used more frequently since the introduction of the function, the search queries have now become two or three times longer than before, and the satisfaction of the users has also increased.

At I/O, Google has now shown how to imagine the future of the search. This will primarily be shaped by even more artificial intelligence. In the United States, Google has already started to roll out AI mode (“Ai Mode”). This focuses on logical conclusions, multimodality and the possibility of putting follow -up questions. Once activated, the AI mode dismisses inquiries from users into different individual topics and at the same time perform several search queries. This would be more relevant, said Google manager Liz Reid, responsible for the web search.

In addition, the AI should take over the purchase advice when looking for an electrical device or can help you find cheap tickets for an event. The well -known web links should continue to be sprinkled with the search results. Due to AI mode, Google search also gives a memory, can remember previous inquiries and coordinate new answers. If you want, you can also give AI access to other Google apps such as Gmail. In this way, the search engine receives even more personal information and lets it flow into the results.

More intelligence for Gemini

The chat bot gets improvements, and the live function with the camera and screensharing mode is also activated free of charge for all Android and iOS devices. As of now, Gemini – initially only in the USA – is also integrated into Chrome, the chatbot can summarize websites there.

In order to meet all the requirements, Google has mainly filed the underlying AI model. Gemini 2.5 Pro was supplied with an update before I/O, 2.5 Flash is updated in early June. Key points of the further developments: improved audio edition with more natural dialogues, better understanding of spoken inquiries, expanded research skills thanks to Deep-Think mode, more security-all at higher speed and lower costs. The BILD-KI (Images 4) and the video steerer (VEO 3) also get updates.

Google Glass 2.0?

Google worked on the Google Glass project for a long time until it was finally discontinued in 2023. Now there is surprisingly new glasses – more precisely a prototype that is equipped with the Android XR operating system. Equipped with the camera, microphone, speakers and a display in the right glasses, it can show information into the user focus. Because there is a connection to the smartphone on which Gemini runs, the chat bot gets eyes and ears. Questions are answered auditively, there are visual overlays.

With all the possible functions such glasses, it is questionable how long the battery would last. Google emphasizes that the glasses are intended for the entire day. Google works with the Smart Glasses with the glasses providers Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The publication date and price are not yet known at this time.
