Zelensky and Biden discussed measures to de-escalate and achieve peace

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and his American counterpart Joe Biden on Sunday, February 13, in a telephone conversation, paid particular attention to de-escalation measures and achieving peace within all available negotiating formats. The heads of state also discussed sanctions against Russia. This is reported by Zelensky’s office.

“Attention was paid to the steps taken to de-escalate and achieve peace within all available negotiating formats. Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted the importance of the efforts of the United States to consolidate international support for Ukraine,” Kyiv said.

Zelensky during the conversation invited Biden to visit Kiev as soon as possible. In addition, the Ukrainian leader asked his American counterpart for additional financial and military assistance. As an unnamed U.S. official told CNN, the Ukrainian leader stressed that economic assistance would show Russia “Western support for Ukraine.” According to the source, Zelenskiy used the Sunday call to offer, as he puts it, “concrete ideas to reduce the Russian threat to Ukraine.”

During the conversation, the US leader promised Kiev to give a “quick and decisive” response to any aggression against Ukraine.

“The head of the Ukrainian state thanked Joseph Biden for the unwavering support of the United States for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and noted the importance of providing effective security guarantees to our country,” Zelensky’s office added.

The Ukrainian leader also stressed that Kiev is aware of all the current risks and is ready for any development of the situation.

“We will stop any escalation towards Ukraine. The capital of Ukraine, Kiev, other cities of our state – Kharkov and Lvov, Dnipro and Odessa – are safe and under reliable protection,” he assured.

The telephone conversation between the leaders of the United States and Ukraine took place on February 13 and lasted about an hour. Biden assured his Ukrainian counterpart that the United States remains committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty, the US administration said. The parties also agreed to continue diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis around Ukraine.

Kiev added that during the conversation, issues of security, economics and sanctions against Russia were also discussed.
