It is not entirely correct to reduce the current crisis in relations between the Russian Federation and the West to a “Russian-Ukrainian conflict”. It is based on a systemic misunderstanding by the United States and NATO of Russian concerns in the sphere of European and international security. This was stated in an interview with Izvestia by Russian Ambassador to Turkey Alexei Yerkhov.
“We are also trying here to convey to our Turkish interlocutors and to local public opinion the idea that the current crisis is based on a systemic misunderstanding by the “collective West”, and above all the United States and NATO, of the most serious Russian concerns in the field of European and international security. This is the essence of the problem, and to reduce it to a kind of “Russian-Ukrainian conflict”, in our opinion, is not entirely correct either politically or methodologically. And it is in the planes of Russia-USA and Russia-NATO that it is necessary to talk about how to put into practice the principle of equal and indivisible security,” the diplomat emphasized.
He also noted that the explanations of the Russian Federation are met in Turkish society with “interested attention, however, calls for Turkey to carry out “mediation” continue to be voiced with enviable constancy.”
