The Budget Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine unanimously agreed to the Cabinet of Ministers the allocation of 16.6 billion hryvnia (more than $591 million) for aircraft leasing insurance, MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak said on Sunday, February 13.
“Representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers reported that negotiations are underway with SkyUP, UIA and Bees (Ukrainian airlines. – Ed.). It was said that it was these companies that received a warning from their lessors that February 14 was the last day for their aircraft to stay in Ukraine. Today’s decision should help,” he added in the Telegram channel.
Earlier, Prime Minister Denys Shmygal announced that the government had allocated UAH 16.6 billion to ensure uninterrupted air travel in Ukraine’s airspace.
The money will be directed to a separate escrow account of the Ministry of Infrastructure in order to direct funds to ensure flight safety if necessary. The allocated finances cover insured events for at least 23 aircraft, the zn.ua portal clarifies. After the situation is resolved, the remaining funds in the account will be redirected to the country’s budget.
Earlier on Sunday, February 13, a SkyUP passenger plane flying from Funchal to Kiev made an emergency landing in Chisinau due to the leasing company’s ban on the liner entering the airspace of Ukraine.
According to one of the sources of Strana.ua, insurance companies are already notifying aircraft owners of the need to withdraw them to the European zone. According to international law, the airline is obliged to insure civil liability, without which it is forbidden to lift aircraft into the sky. Therefore, the recall of insurers may paralyze air travel in Ukraine.
