FT source spoke about Berlin’s expectations from Scholz’s visit to Moscow

The German authorities do not expect concrete results from the visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Moscow. This was reported by the Financial Times on Sunday, February 13, citing a senior source in the German government.

“I don’t think that we will get any concrete result from this,” the source said, at the same time noting that “now is not the time to give up.”

Scholz’s goal is to “better understand what Russia is trying to achieve and try to find out if there are any opportunities to return to direct dialogue” at the OSCE, in the Russia-NATO Council or in other formats. According to him, Scholz is committed to progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Earlier, on February 11, German Chancellor, US President Joe Biden, French leader Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed the situation around Ukraine. As the official representative of the German government, Steffen Hebestreit, noted, the allies expressed their determination to jointly impose “quick and thorough” sanctions against Russia in case of violation of the “territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.”

On the eve of Scholz said that Europe is ready for a serious dialogue with Russia on security issues. He also pointed out that “Russia’s new military aggression against Ukraine will have very serious political, economic and strategic consequences” for Moscow. According to the German leader, the West expects from the Russian side “steps to reduce the current tension” around Ukraine.

On February 2, the German Chancellor announced a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit to Moscow is scheduled for February 15.
