The female cycle consists of several phases, controlled by the hormones estrogen and progesterone, and begins with the menstrual bleeding. “After ovulation, many women are particularly fit and active,” explains Eva Binder, senior physician for gynecology in the Kirchdorf Clinic. But in the phase before the next bleeding, some of the well -being decreased rapidly. Typical symptoms: fatigue, irritability, abdominal pain – the famous “PMS”.
Not every woman suffers from it equally. The social expectation “You have to go through” thinks Binder is out of date: “It is often imitated what the mother shows – but severe menstrual pain is not just fate.”
The spectrum extends from slight abdominal pain to migraines, back pain, digestive problems and extreme exhaustion. In some women, these symptoms begin days before the actual bleeding. Mental stress – from mood swings to the feeling of being sick – are also part of it.
