From now on, the section will have its own secretary, appointed pontifically, and will function independently from the rest of the structure of the Doctrine of the Faith in order to study and judge complaints of pederasty by members of the Church.
In addition to the section dedicated to the discipline today reinforced, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith includes a section for the doctrinal part, which remains within the structure, and one dedicated to questions “of the marriage bond” that disappears with the new decree.
From now on, “the Disciplinary Section, through the Disciplinary Office, deals with the offenses reserved to the Congregation and dealt with by it, through the jurisdiction of the Supreme Apostolic Court established there”, established Jorge Bergoglio with the decree pontifical document released today by the Vatican.
The section today reinforced, now has “the function of preparing and elaborating the procedures foreseen by the canonical legislation so that the Congregation, in its diverse instances (Prefect, Secretary, Promoter of Justice, Congress, Ordinary Session, College for the knowledge of resources in matters of serious crimes), can promote proper administration of justice” added the Pope.
Until Monday’s decree, the disciplinary section dealt with “crimes against the faith, as well as the most serious crimes committed against morality and in the celebration of the sacraments” as well as “other matters related to the discipline of Faith”.
The initiative of Pope Francis, which in practice involves the elevation to a kind of “undersecretary” of the fight against abuse within the so-called “doctrinal ministry” of the Vatican, seeks to promote “the appropriate training initiatives that the Congregation offers to the Ordinaries and to the jurists, to favor a correct understanding and application of the canonical norms relative to their own sphere of competence”.
The doctrinal section, meanwhile, will have under its purview “matters pertinent to the promotion and protection of the doctrine of faith and morals.”
In addition, it will be in charge of favoring “the studies destined to increase the intelligence and the transmission of the faith in the service of evangelization, so that its light is a criterion to understand the meaning of existence, especially in the face of the questions raised by the progress of the sciences and the development of society”.
