“The word has been respected today, at around 11 in the morning the unblocking began progressively, both in the Antofagasta, Tarapacá, Coquimbo and O’Higgins regions,” Delgado told the media.
Leaders of truckers’ unions announced on Sunday afternoon that they would clear routes 5, 28 and B-400, which connect the regions of Antofagasta and Tarapacá, at noon, and agreed to end the mobilizations after accompanying a funeral procession of Castillo in a caravan inside the neighborhood where he lived, located in Antofagasta.
After meeting on Sunday with state authorities, the union representatives were satisfied with the agreements reached.
Among the demands they highlighted the request for a military presence at the borders, greater patrolling and the presence of carabineros (Chilean police), the implementation of the new migration law and the State of Exception.
The carriers’ claim began with the murder of Byron Castillo, a truck driver who confronted a group of foreigners who allegedly threw him from a footbridge.
After investigating the incident, police arrested three Venezuelan citizens in the situation of irregular migrants.
The Government of Chile announced on Saturday the decree of Exception status with immediate effect for the next 15 days in the northern provinces of Arica, Parinacota, Tamarugal and Loa.
At the same time, the approved regulations of the new migration law were published in the official gazette, with which President Sebastián Piñera intends to tighten border measures and control entry through unauthorized border crossings.
The northern altiplanic passes – on the border with Bolivia – represent the main route of entry for irregular migrants.
In Chile there are 1.4 million migrants, which is equivalent to more than 7% of the population. Venezuelans are the most numerous, followed by Peruvians, Haitians and Colombians.
