In recent years, Washington has had a lot of powerful opponents, in whose favor the “balance of power” is shifting in the political arena. This opinion was expressed by Patrick Buchanan, Senior Advisor to US Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, in an article for The American Conservative.
“We had everything at once. We were an “indispensable power”. We looked to the future. We imposed our “benevolent hegemony” on the rest of humanity. And finally, creating a “new world order”, they consistently got involved in wars . In doing so, we bled, got distracted, drained ourselves and cracked,” he wrote.
Buchanan urged to remember the slogan “Come home, America”, popular in the 70s.
According to him, the United States has amassed strong geopolitical opponents, including Russia and China. According to the expert, Washington will not be able to deal with such adversaries at the same time.
“American hegemony is under attack everywhere: in Eastern Europe, in the Middle East, in Southeast Asia, in East Asia. The opponents of America have one thing in common: they want to remove us from their regions, ”Buchanan said.
In addition, according to the former adviser, the US will eventually have to agree to Russia’s proposals for security guarantees and “neither Georgia nor Ukraine will be invited to NATO, despite the alliance’s open door policy.”
The expert concluded that the balance of power in the world is constantly changing, and the “enemies of America” are gaining more and more strength, while at the same time “seeking to weaken Washington.”
Earlier, on January 22, Mark Katz, a columnist for the American National Interest newspaper, expressed the opinion that a civil war could lead to the collapse of the United States, the beginning of which would be the country’s demographic transition from a predominantly white population to a non-white population in the 2040s. The journalist assured that such changes will allow other countries to fill in the missing link, which is formed as a result of the fall of the United States.
Prior to this, in November 2021, in his article for Bloomberg, columnist Max Hastings said that the immediate collapse of the United States should not be expected, but such a prospect can already be imagined, which could not have been done at the beginning of the millennium. He explained that the United States has always been divided in its political views.
