OSCE assessed its role in the process of de-escalation in Europe

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is the world’s largest regional forum, but how it works depends on the countries that participate. This was stated to Izvestia by the OSCE press service, commenting on the current dialogue between the Russian Federation and Western countries on security in Europe.

“The OSCE offers a platform for dialogue and cooperation on a scale not found in any other part of the world. With such a broad representation – 57 member states that think differently – contradictions certainly exist, – the press service of the organization told Izvestia. “Nevertheless, the OSCE has tools and mechanisms that provide a vital platform for dialogue and cooperation. The OSCE is always ready to maintain a dialogue on the situation in the region. At the same time, we have no right to evaluate such discussions.”

The dialogue on security guarantees between Russia and the West has been going on since the beginning of January 2022. It is based on Russian demands on the US and NATO, which Moscow published in December 2021. They come down to three key points: firstly, the non-expansion of the alliance to the east, secondly, the return of its weapons to the positions of 1997, when the Russia-NATO Founding Act was signed, and thirdly, the non-deployment of strike weapons near Russian borders.
