Many people use the upcoming Pentecost weekend for a short vacation. The start of the summer vacation season is imminent: domestic tourismists are particularly satisfied with the booking situation in the first half of the holiday. Despite the difficult economic situation, people like to travel. “Tourism is even one of the profiteers in times of crisis because people are looking for compensation on vacation,” says Markus Achleitner Tourism Council. Depending on the price category, people would sometimes save on the side editions. Achleitner took stock of the previous tourism year in Linz on Friday with representatives of the domestic tourism industry and gave a view of this year.
In the past tourism season (November 2023 to October 2024) in Upper Austria, 3.2 million guests, an increase of 3.36 percent, have more than ever. The number of overnight stays has increased by 2.4 percent to 8.85 million. So there were more holidaymakers, but on average they remained a little shorter. The number of overnight stays has increased by more than a quarter within ten years. For comparison: According to Statistics Austria, 79.3 million overnight stays in the previous year accounted for the federal states of Tyrol and Salzburg. Tourism in Upper Austria is ten percent of the gross regional product, 40,000 people are employed. More than 50 percent of the guests came from Austria in 2024, and Germany was ahead of the Czech Republic at the foreign markets. A survey of tourism monitor Austria shows that Upper Austria’s varied landscape with mountains and lakes are the most important motive for a summer vacation.
A coveted target group are the cyclists: asked about their vacation activities, 39 percent of the guests have given to ride the bike, for around a quarter it is even the main activity. Cyclists stay over average long and spend 15 percent more with 210 euros a day than the average holiday guest.
There are 6000 kilometers of cycle paths in Upper Austria, “cycling is possible in all seven tourism destinations and in demand in all markets,” says Christoph Glasner, marketing manager of Upper Austria Tourism. 10.6 million Germans would get on the bike on vacation, “the potential is very great here”. There are numerous offers across the federal state.
