You can do without a lot: sweets, alcohol, meat – and now also on all activities that make you happy. The concept is called Dopamin-Detox and was developed by the California psychiatrist Cameron Sepah. The brain should recover and we feel emotions – according to the theory.

Instead of looking at series, being active on social media or doing something with friends, you areolate as far as possible from all stimuli for a while that could trigger joy. You do without cakes and sports, instead you go for a walk alone and take a diary.

“Not desirable”

Psychologist Peter Eberle is skeptical. “I find the term misleading, because dopamine cannot be fasted. This is an important neurotransmitter that the brain is constantly producing and which is always released when we experience or expect something pleasant,” says the expert from the Institute for Addiction Prevention of Pro Mente Upper Austria. “A dopamine deficiency in the brain is a sign of a state of depression-and therefore not desirable,” he says.
It is also not desirable to do without everything that is fun. “Because that is exactly what makes our life worth living”. And that is essential for a good life in addition to good social contacts, recognition and autonomy, i.e. the opportunity to make your own decisions, the psychologist says.
