Do you still remember? “In situ” was a project by Dagmar Höss, Monika Sommer, Heidemarie Uhl zu Linz09-“in situ”, “in place”, where a Nazi crime took place in Linz, the deeds were described on the floor.

Austria is said to receive a Holocaust Museum, and the coalition has agreed on that at the beginning of its work. How this will look, what and how exactly should be conveyed there is still open. A feasibility study is running, and the messages should send reports from those countries and cities where there are already facilities. For example in Washington, where Petra Schneebauer from Lambach (Wels-Land district) is an ambassador. There is also a corresponding museum there.

The planned museum is said to be in Vienna. But last week, the Linz historian Michael John and the former Mayor of Linz Franz Dobusch (SP) proposed Linz as a “logical and correct” alternative location.

The OÖNACHACHEN have asked Barbara Glück, director of Mauthausen Memorial, and Monika Sommer, director of the House of History in Vienna, how to assess the relevance of a corresponding museum and whether they could also imagine Linz as a location.

Participation process in Gusen as a model?

Barbara Glück says that “our community would tolerate it if there is an enlargement for the placement offer”. No contact had yet been made with her, but according to the government, this was planned. After all, a letter, drawn by Chancellor Christian Stocker (VP), Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler (SP) and Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS), says that “representatives of existing relevant institutions are also invited”.

Barbara Glück could then report on an exemplary participation process, namely about the one who took place in Gusen. There, not only international organizations were involved in the planning about the orientation of the future memorial location, but above all the population – the Gusen concentration camp was part of the complex Mauthausen, sometimes even more imprisoned than the regular camp itself.
