Belarus will not rush to recognize the DPR and LPR, this step will change many modalities in the post-Soviet space. This was stated to Izvestia by the head of the committee on international affairs of the Belarusian parliament Andrei Savinykh.
“If Russia, after the appeal of the State Duma, recognizes the DPR and LPR, this will be a serious foreign policy step, it will definitely change many modalities in the post-Soviet space. I do not want to anticipate the content of our reaction. But if such a decision is made by Moscow, then it will be taken seriously by Russia’s allies, ”the politician specified.
Earlier that day, the State Duma voted in favor of an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to recognize the DNR and LNR. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stressed that the resolution adopted by the deputies would be immediately sent to the head of state. According to him, the parliamentarians are convinced that the initiative will create grounds for ensuring security guarantees and protecting the inhabitants of the republics from external threats.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry warned of the devastating consequences of the adoption of the initiative. According to the press secretary of the department, Oleg Nikolenko, the recognition of the DPR and LPR will not have legal consequences, but will deal a blow to the diplomatic settlement in Donbass.
In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the issue of recognizing the republics is relevant and “reflects the opinion of the people.” At the same time, he stressed that Russia remains committed to the Minsk Package of Measures, the entire action plan must be “implemented in the sequence provided for there.”
On February 1, the DPR called on Western countries and international organizations to stop the supply of lethal weapons to Ukraine and force Kiev to comply with the Minsk agreements. Otherwise, the DPR promised to seek military assistance from Moscow.
Since 2014, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the intra-Ukrainian conflict. The issues of its settlement are being discussed in the Minsk and Normandy formats.
