Clementin, who is still alive and is 98 years old, refused to comment when the weekly contacted him, the magazine said, although the possible criminal offenses that could lead to his performance have already prescribed.

“Obviously, we were not aware, we are astonished,” declared Nicolas Brimo, current director of Le Canard Enchaîné, a publication that often mocks France’s political elite but also publishes revelations. “If there’s anything else to add, we’ll do it in our own paper,” he explained.

In its investigation, L’Obs cited a StB file discovered by Czech historian Jan Koura, vice-rector of Charles University in Prague.

At the same time that he signed his notes with the pseudonym “Jean Mannan”Clementin passed information to Czech intelligence under another code name: “Pipe”.

Clementin sent some 300 notes in those years and had 270 meetings with his Czech officials in France and abroad.

The journalist, who retired in 1989, also participated in three “disinformation” operations by publishing articles in the weekly that had been conceived by the StB. The investigation analyzed more than 1,500 pages of files that had remained secret.
