German Chancellor Olaf Scholz noted that he had held very intensive and confidential negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He stated that there are enough prerequisites for achieving peace and security in Europe: “We will use them.”
Olaf Scholz also noted that there are enough topics to continue the conversation with Russia and called the start of negotiations with Russia on security guarantees a “smart reaction” from NATO.
“We must do everything to use these starting points to achieve peace and security in Europe, to make sure that we have a good future in order to avoid war in Europe … There are enough prerequisites for things to develop in the right direction, their we have to use,” Scholz said during a live broadcast on the N24 TV channel.
During a joint press conference, he said that Ukraine’s membership in NATO was not on the agenda and spoke sharply negatively about a possible military confrontation with Russia.
In his opinion, the military agenda is more significant and pan-European. In many respects, its outcome depends on the reaction of NATO. Vladimir Putin has clearly expressed Russia’s interests, but the alliance’s response may not satisfy him. It contains such a thesis as “readiness for transparency”.
“This applies to all military maneuvers, including the deployment of weapons and arms control dialogue. I think that this is definitely not what the Russian president probably wanted to see,” Scholz added.
Following the conference, the German Chancellor noted that, despite the differences in the views of the parties, they have a chance to continue the dialogue and direct the situation in a more peaceful direction. Indeed, at the moment they have “enough starting points” for a positive outcome of events around the territory of Ukraine.
On February 15, Vladimir Putin met with Olaf Scholz for the first time since he was elected German Chancellor. During the meeting, the President of Russia answered a question about further actions in the field of security.
