“This year, after two years, the Gartenland Tour can start again in full,” announced the oö. Agricultural Minister Michaela Langer-Weninger yesterday together with state gardener Hannes Hofmüller and organic gardener Karl Ploberger at a press conference. For two years, the program was only possible in a slimmed-down version due to the corona virus.
This year’s Garden Country Tour will be all about climate protection and the circular economy. “The trend towards gardening and self-sufficiency has gained even more traction as a result of the pandemic,” said Langer-Weninger. People appreciate healthy food from their own garden or from the farmer around the corner more than ever. Environmental and climate protection have also come more to the fore. “There is a great desire to contribute something to the well-being of bees, insects and biodiversity with one’s own green patch of earth,” says the agricultural minister. Climate-friendly planting, harvesting and enjoying are therefore the most important buzzwords for the Garden Country Tour in 2022.
This year the event will stop in Vorchdorf (March 1st), Ried (March 7th), St. Marienkirchen (March 8th), Gramastetten (March 9th) and Dietach (March 21st). At all dates, OÖNachrichten organic gardener Karl Ploberger will also give gardening tips. “My goal is to continue to increase the joy and desire for gardening,” he says.
State gardener Hannes Hofmüller presented the plants of the year: “The straw flower Schöne Helena is the balcony flower of the year. It is characterized by heat resistance and its radiant flowers.” The marvelous sage Marvel Rose was chosen as the bee plant for 2022. It will bring joy for many years because it is hardy. The mini watermelon Lolita is the vegetable of the year. It is the smallest watermelon in the world and is now also growing well in Austria due to global warming.
