Around 5.15 a.m. in the morning, officials from the Koppstraße police inspection were alerted that the police on Sunday said in a house on the Lerchenfelder belt. The Viennese professional fire brigade had already started extinguishing work at this time. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Several residents of the house already left their apartments due to the strong smoke development and were looked after by the rescue. When the extinguishing work was completed, the tenant, in whose apartment the fire had broken out, came to the police. He confessed in place to have put the fire himself. “The man said that he had an inner urge to light things,” said the police spokeswoman. The alleged perpetrator may have a mental illness.
The 46-year-old Austrian has been convicted three times for arson in the past and was therefore already in custody. The alleged perpetrator, in which alcoholization of almost 1.5 per thousand was determined, has been temporarily arrested. He was brought to the arrest area of the Ottakring city police command.
High damage occurred
According to the first estimates of the experts, the fire caused damage of several 10,000 euros. The fire group of the Vienna State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation. The 46-year-old was reported on suspicion of the arson and transferred to a judiciary on the order of the Vienna public prosecutor’s office.
