Serbian President Vucic dissolves parliament and calls early elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić dissolved parliament and called early elections. The corresponding document was signed by the head of state on February 15 live during an address to the nation, which was broadcast by the national television of the country.

“Dear citizens, on the basis of the Constitution of Serbia and the law “On the President of Serbia”, at the suggestion of the government, I am issuing a decree on the dissolution of the National Assembly,” the president said and signed the relevant document.

He added that early elections are scheduled for April 3, 2022.

On the eve of the Cabinet of Ministers of Serbia sent the president a proposal to dissolve the parliament.

“If the proposal is accepted, after the dissolution of parliament, the government will enter into a technical mandate. The government will continue to fulfill all its obligations in the technical mandate in full,” the Cabinet of Ministers said in a statement.

In July 2020, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) won the last parliamentary elections with a score of 60.65%. Thus, the party won 1,953,998 votes from voters who came to the polls and received 188 seats in parliament.

In second place is the electoral list of Ivica Dacic – the Socialist Party of Serbia and Dragan Markovic Palma – United Serbia with 334,333 votes, i.e. 10.38% and 32 mandates. The electoral list “Aleksandar Šapić – “Victory for Serbia” won 123,393 votes (3.83%) and won 11 seats.
