For seven months – from March 2nd to September 30th of this year – the Westbahnbrücke in Vöcklabruck, the crossing of the Hausruck-Bundesstraße (B143) over the railway line, will be renovated. This is accompanied by detours to and from the Ried area.
The work was necessary to secure both traffic routes in the long term. In the course of this, there will also be a total closure of the federal road during the period mentioned. Traffic Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP): “The general renovation of the bridge is necessary in order to be able to guarantee the availability and safety of the B143 leading above it and the western railway line below it in the long term.”
Due to the existing signs of wear and tear, the wing and retaining walls including wall protection, the abutments and the supporting structure are being repaired. Road and bridge equipment, specifically guardrails or railings, as well as bridge sealing, road surface and street lighting are also replaced and rebuilt. The edge beam of the bridge and the walls in the direction of Vöcklabruck will also be renewed. The existing footpath and cycle path will also be widened.
Normally such a site would require almost two years of work. However, a half-way barrier is not possible for technical reasons, as a bridge like this would collapse. So the only alternative left is a total lockdown. “If the building had been under traffic, the obstruction to traffic would have been almost two years,” says State Councilor Steinkellner. “The total lock guarantees more static safety on the construction site, for the vehicle drivers and train drivers.” In addition, the quality of the renovation is significantly higher and at the same time more cost-effective.
