The Linz tree planting offensive goes into the next round: After the Neustadtviertel, it is now the turn of the Andreas-Hoffer district, which is one of the most heat-lit districts in Linz and is to be greened in two stages. “We have to invest in more city green, especially in particularly dense parts of the city, such as the Andreas Hoffer district,” says Mayor Dietmar Prammer (SP).

Especially along Wiener Straße, dense buildings, missing green areas and low ventilation cause high thermal load. Last year alone, 28 tropical nights were recorded at the measuring point of the Otto Glöckel School-as many than at no other station in the Linz city area. Large crown trees and drawings are supposed to dampen the heat development. However, new tree locations are only added in this first phase: two in front of the Otto Glöckel School, two compared to the Herz-Jesu Church and two more at the Union Crossing bus.
20 year old trees no longer grow
Trees must be replaced at 13 other locations. This is part of the redesign of Wiener Straße in 2007, trees that are not optimally develop, are sometimes damaged. Instead of 20 meters, the trees are only about eight meters high and will hardly grow. The majority of it is on the traffic island between Lissagasse and Melicharstrasse. “With our measures, we take the first important step for more green in this particularly affected district and increase the quality of stay along Wiener Strasse,” says climate city councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens).
