The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, demanded on Monday the governments of Tel Aviv and Tehran that end military actions. He also denounced the “horrible and inconceivable suffering” suffered by the Palestinians in Gaza.
The Human Rights Chief of the UN, Volker Türkopened on Monday the 59th Session of the Human Rights Council expressing its “deep concern” for the military escalation between Israel and Iran and asking both parties to stop attacks and hostilities.
“I join those who ask for a de -escalation and the urgent beginning of diplomatic negotiations to put an end to those attacks and find a solution”said the Austrian in his initial speech of the four -week session, in which he reviewed the situation of human rights in the world. “I also ask that both parties respect international law, especially with regard to the protection of civilians in densely populated areas,” added the High Commissioner of Human Rights.

Türk stressed that Israel is causing “unbearable suffering to the Palestinians in Gaza”, where more than 55,000 people have died since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023, including thousands of children. The High Commissioner denounced that Israel has turned the blockade of humanitarian assistance and the lack of food in Gaza into a weapon, and urged the recent attacks on desperate civilians who tried to obtain food in food distribution centers.
“The facts speak for themselves, every person with responsibility in the government must wake up to what is happening in Gaza, and all those who have influence must exert the greatest possible pressure with Israel and Hamas to end this unbearable suffering,” Türk said.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights also talked about bloodshed in Gaza and has asked for the release of Israeli hostages retained by armed Palestinian militiamen, used some of his most forceful words so far to highlight violence in the Middle East.
“Israel’s media and methods are inflicting horrible and inconceivable suffering to the Palestinians in Gaza,” Türk told the body of 47 member countries, which Israeli authorities have regularly accused Antiisraelí bias. The Trump government has kept the United States, the main ally of Israel, outside the council sessions.
Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 55,300 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. He affirms that women and children constitute most of the dead, but do not distinguish between civilians and combatants in their counting.
“The facts speak for themselves. Everyone in the government must awaken what is happening in Gaza,” Türk said. “All those with influence must exert maximum pressure on Israel and Hamas to end this unbearable suffering.”
It is expected that the council session, which has been shortened in two and a half days due to financing problems at the UN, lasts until July 9. The Geneva -based council is the UN Human Rights Agency.
