It is a so -called “hospital network” from the existing hospitals, cooperation with hospitals in Upper Austria and Salzburg. The Rottenmann location is upgraded in the range of services.
The spokesman for the expert commission, Herwig Ostermann (Health Austria) in January, spoke of an “alternative framework concept” on Wednesday. It provides for the expansion of the Rottenmann location and the preservation of the Schladming and Bad Aussee locations.

Volker Knestel from the Lower Austrian Health and Social Fund and member of the expert commission explained the alternative draft in detail. The LKH location Rottenmann receives five new areas, among other things: a new department for orthopedics and traumatology, a department for remobilization and aftercare, a unit for children and adolescents, which is supervised by Leoben, for the first time four hosts and a multidisciplinary and functional outpatient intervention space. Offers of surgery, internal medicine, gynecology and obstetrics, an intensive care unit, dialysis and palliative care unit will continue according to this plan, said Knestel.
Schladming without a birth station
The birth station is closed in the Schladming deaconess hospital. Here there were only 20 percent occupancy for the six beds, said Knestel. Now the construction of a midwife center for mothers for the time before and after birth is planned. According to the plan, orthopedic and traumatological and surgical care is to be carried out in close cooperation with Rottenmann and the Salzburg Clinic Schwarzach. Overall, the number of beds could reduce 102 to 52.
According to the alternative concept, the LKH location Bad Aussee would become a center for older people – with a new department for acute geriatrics and remobilization. In addition, there would be a health center with two cash discounts and outpatient care. Cooperation with the Salzkammergut Klinikum (Bad Ischl) is planned for surgical and internal care. This would reduce the previous number of beds from 32 to 24.
Patient takeover by Bad Ischl and Schwarzach
Health Councilor Karlheinz Kornhäusl (ÖVP) emphasized that the planned close cooperation with hospitals in Upper Austria and Salzburg would “enter” real territory “. There were initial talks that should be further deepened in the next few weeks. The entire alternative draft will be handed over to the Styrian Hospital Society (Kages), which should check it until late autumn for costs, personnel requirements and implementation period. Only then could the state government be made on the part of the state government. Until then, the new regional structural plan for Styria should also be created, as Michael Koren from the Styria health fund added.
